TOTE

TOTE: Tools for Optics Technology Education

The Tools for Optics Technology Education bag, or TOTE for short, was created to meet the needs of the Center for Integrated Access Networks (CIAN) outreach. As a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) the education and outreach to pre-college students is an essential portion of the mission of the ERC. CIAN is a collaboration of ten universities composing this ERC to achieve its research, educational, and industry goals.

These universities include the University of Arizona (lead) (UA); the California Institute of Technology (CalTech); the University of California, Berkeley; the University of California, San Diego (UCSD); the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); the University of Southern California (USC); Tuskegee University; Cornell University; Columbia University; and Norfolk State University (NSU).

Spanning the United States of America and including many students, organizing and initiating the students to go out and regularly complete outreach events can be a monumental task. For this reason, a new method was deemed necessary to provide the appropriate encouragement for students to reach out to the community surrounding their universities.

This outreach tool began as a backpack, created by Trinidat Riojas, and was expanded into the TOTE bag in the hopes of making this process easier, less stressful, and more enjoyable for students.

A manual was organized for the students to better use the TOTE. It is available for download through the attachment below. The TOTE manual will continue to be updated and made better.
